Our Curriculum Enables Children to Achieve Competence.

The Arts
Young children are just beginning to learn to express themselves so, in addition to language, we encourage them to express themselves through the arts. The children are given a wide variety of mediums to freely explore. In addition to the visual arts, the children use their bodies to dance, their voices to sing and their imaginations to express themselves through creative dramatics.

Cultural Diversity
Ethnic background and religious tradition are shared with the children. Different family types are represented in the children’s literature including same-sex and interracial families. This helps children to feel valued and to learn to develop tolerance and accept differences.

Science Exploration Meets Outdoor Play
Our huge backyard provides a safe, natural setting that is ideal for the exploration of the natural world. Children also develop their large motor skills through physical activities such as climbing on our playground equipment, running, playing ball and filling dump trucks. In the warm weather gardening and picnics are a regular part of the program.

Emergent, Project Based Curriculum
In Preschool and Pre-K we use an emergent or project-based curriculum, which has its roots in the Italian Reggio Emilia schools. The curriculum is shaped by the children’s natural interests and curiosity about the world, thereby helping them to become independent learners.

Our groups are tailored to respect and accommodate

the emotional, intellectual and physical well-being of each child rather than sorting them solely by chronological age. In light of this, our groupings of children are purposely somewhat fluid and all groups are multi-age – an ideal way for children to develop important social skills. When deciding which group is best for your children we consider their physical and emotional maturity, temperament, birth order, motor skills, developmental abilities, potty training, the make-up of each group and other factors. Our four groups, and their average age guidelines, are: Infant/Toddler, 3 months – 2 1/2 years; Transition, 18 months –3 1/2 years; Pre-School 2 3/4 to 4 ½ years and Pre-K 4 – 6 years. As children move through the program, interaction with all the children in the center, as well as with the entire staff is incorporated into their daily routine. This structure encourages a sense of community and the formation of strong emotional bonds and connections, and provides a healthy foundation of security and stability.

    Where Learning Comes Naturally

For over forty years, House at Pooh Corner has been nurturing children’s natural desire to learn by providing a healthy and stimulating environment in which we encourage them to flourish through exploration and discovery.

Accommodating children from three months to six years of age, we respect individual development at all stages, recognizing the unique contribution each child adds to the group dynamic, and emphasizing the importance of age-appropriate play as a means of self-epression and social development.
